FLL Qualifying Tournaments are one kind of FLL Event. These tournaments will qualify a team to attend a Championship Tournament. In the United States, it is most common that a state may use Qualifying Tournaments as a way to limit the number of teams that attend the Championship Tournament for the state (also known as the State Tournament. Thus, a team may be required to achieve a certain award at the qualifying tournament or be in the top "x" teams to move on to the state level. How Championship Tournaments are run can vary significantly from state to state. Some variations include...

  • Large states (California, Texas, etc.) may have multiple Championship Tournaments (Souther California, Northern California, etc.)
  • States with many teams may use Qualifying Tournaments as described above
  • Some states with many teams may use a lottery system to allow only x number of teams chosen at random by lottery to attend the Championship Tournament
  • States without too many teams may only have a State Tournament

Please note that at this time state FLL Partners have wide latitude in how they run their tournaments and qualifiers.
