The SBPLI Long Island Regional began in 2000 at the Suffolk County Community College Ammerman Campus gymnasium, barely containing the 24 teams that competed. In the years since, it moved to a larger venue at Suffolk County Community and then to Hofstra University's sports arena. It has helped cradle to growth of FIRST on Long Island by providing area teams with the opportunity to compete locally, helping to overcome fundraising challenges that may be unique to Long Island teams.
The creation of the regional came as a result of the hard work put forth by Fred Breithut, president of School-Business Partnerships of Long Island. In subsequent years, RIT student and former team 73 president, Christina Alzona, also worked alongside Fred Breithut in recruiting teams and sponsors for this event and insuring that fundraising and planning were successful.
